Wake On LAN

Ever thought of turning on or awakening your computer via a network message? Sure you did and so we will discuss how to do it.


Hardware:  Make sure your NIC and mother board support  Wake On LAN feature.  Non managed cards do not support WOL while the managed ones do.

BIOS: In the BIOS you will have an option labelled  as “Wake On LAN”. You need to enable that.

Software: Next we need to enable/activate the ”WOL” in software.  This can be done using ethtool.  

Installing ethtool

  1. $ sudo apt-get update<br />$ sudo apt-get install ethtool
$ sudo apt-get update<br />$ sudo apt-get install ethtool


  1. # apt-get update
  2. # apt-get install ethtool
# apt-get update
# apt-get install ethtool


Setting up the interface for the WOL magic message acceptance.

  1. $ su
  2. # ethtool -s eth0 wol g
$ su
# ethtool -s eth0 wol g


Sending the magic packet

etherwake or wakeonlan packages can be used to send the magic from the computer to the target host
